Roto's Magic Act

Roto’s Magic Act Casts A Spell at SXSW

We had such a great time, and such a memorable show, at the Rachael Ray Feedback House during SxSW in Austin this year, with a band comprised of Austin aces like drummer Darin Murphy and guitarist Chris Gebhard. While the horrible events of that first Wednesday night shocked us all, we chose to move forward with the spirit of compassion for those who suffered, and a celebration of the life force that animated them to come out and enjoy music, for which they paid a terrible cost. May the hearts and bodies of those affected heal. Here we humbly present a sample of our show from Thursday night, outdoors under a beautiful moon, with a lovely and receptive crowd. Thanks to Nolan Green for the video clips, and to Rachael and her team for having us.

Syd Barrett’s “Long Gone,” covered by Roto’s Magic Act

Founding member of Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett was the group’s frontman, guitarist and golden child, before his adventures in psychedelic space flew him too close to the sun. His solo albums are stunning, if ragged, and this song, “Long Gone,” from the album The Madcap Laughs, is one of my favorites—melancholy, hope, wisdom, dreamscape, and resignation all in one song. I’m so proud to give you my own take on this gothic jewel of a song. . . .
